A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday to mark the completion of the renovations to the Plaza at the Porter County Government Administration Center in Valparaiso. Porter County officials and staff gathered to celebrate the improvements to the plaza in front of the building, which opened in 1993, exactly 25 years ago to the day of the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The new plaza includes a sloped, ADA compliant walkway with lighted handrails leading to the front door, an underground heating system that will prevent ice and snow accumulation in winter months, and an underground storage tank to collect storm water runoff that will then be used to irrigate the improved landscaping. The storm water system will not only benefit the environment, but will also assist the County in meeting their public education requirements as part of the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System Program.

The new plaza also includes raised tree planter boxes, and surrounding concrete ledges that can be used as seating during warm months for the public to use to relax in the downtown area.

Laura Blaney, South District Porter County Commissioner told the Region News Team, these new improvements fit in with all the improvements made in the downtown area and will provide additional seating for the public visting all the area has to offer.

Debby Boggs, a 30 year county employee, who became the receptionist at the Administration Center when it opened, did the honors of cutting the ribbon. The new plaza was designed by American StructurePoint of Indianapolis and constructed by Gariup Construction of Gary.
